Beowulf

Cody DeLong Mrs. Jenkins British Literature 1A (5) 28 November, 2012 Beowulf, is an Epic in which the endorser follows Beowulf, on a several quest to defeat terzetto monsters. The three monsters include Grendel, Grendels mother, and the Dragon. This English poem uses dichotomies. Dichotomies be defined as opposites on the same spectrum. For example, steady-going to evil, takeoff booster to baddie, and young to old, etc. The dichotomies are used throughout the story, provided the one that sticks out the most is good to evil. In the ahead of time of Beowulfs three battles, he fights Grendel, an Till the monster stirred, that demon, that teras/Grendel who haunted the moors, the wild /Marshes, and made his home in a hell.[Lines 101-108] Grendel attacked the people out of anger and jealousy, because they were constantly celebrating. When Beowulf heard of Grendels attacks, he set out to avenge the Danes. Grendel is no braver, no stronger/ Than I am! I could kill him w ith my sword; I shall not,/ Easy as it would be. This fiend is a bold/ And historied fighter, scarcely his claws and teeth.../Beating at my sword blade, would be helpless. I will meet him/ With my hands empty-unless his heart/ Fails him, seeing a soldier wait/ Weaponless, unafraid. Let God in His experience/ Extend His hand where He wills, reward/ Whom he chooses! [lines 677-687] Although Grendel had his protections, Beowulf is haughty in defeating him by brutally pulling Grendels do up from his socket, fatally wounding him. In this battle Grendel was patently the villain and Beowulf was the hero. Not even the sharpest of swords could have cut it [Grendels hand] through, gloomy it wrap up the monsters Arm and ended its life, as Beowulf had do armed exclusively with his bare hands. [Lines 987-990] This is one example of the good to evil dichotomy. In the second of his three battles, Beowulf fights Grendels mother.
